Larisa Schelkin, CEO & President of the DOME Foundation (Foundation for the Diversity and Outreach in Mathematics and Engineering) was recently honored with a Catalyst Award for her work in supporting diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education from Massachusetts Science Club for Girls.
The award recognizes her hard work and a life-long dedication to supporting girls and all students from underrepresented groups in engineering and science. "I'm honored to receive this award," says Schelkin. "This is a great privilege being recognized together with an outstanding national leader in education, Dr. Evelynn Hammonds, the first African-American woman to serve as Dean of Harvard College." "I strongly believe that only working together - government, business and education -- we can increase participation and improve the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education," added Schelkin.
The award was presented at the Catalyst Award Ceremony & Science Club for Girls' 15th Anniversary Celebration held at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT on May 26 in Cambridge, MA. President of Wellesley College, Dr. Kim Bottomly and The Honorable E. Dennis Simmons, the first African-American Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts delivered welcoming address and congratulations to Catalyst Award recipients. The Honorary Committee included President of Tufts University, Dr. Larry Bacow; President of Pine Manor College, Dr. Gloria Nemerowicz; President of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Dr. Pantic; the Nobel Prize winners - Dr. Philip Sharp, Dr. Craig Mello, Dr. Jerome Friedman; a lifetime Board of Trustee member at MIT, Dr. Whitehead; and CEO of Cytonome, Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff.
